Stickley Lodge Getaway is in an adventure area. First of all, Stickley (which is between Watersmeet, MI and Marenisco, MI) has much history itself (see more information and photos on the regular website for the cabin at: www.stickleylodgegetaway.weebly.com). Text or leave message: 920-680-7095
CISCO BRANCH ONTONAGON RIVER: Part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. Just down the road to the West (could go for a walk) is the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. The Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River is the branch that comes from the Cisco Chain of Lakes, Cisco Lake. The Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River has a variety of terrain areas where the river quiets or the river goes over rocks making tranquil sounds or the Kakabika waterfall, etc. Some fishing done on part of it. Some parts of the Ontonagon River and its branches are good for canoeing and kayaking. Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout drains into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. Restoration Project of the Historic Lake Sturgeon in the Ontonagon River. River has variety of branches including West Branch, Middle Branch, etc. The natives use to call it Nantonnagun. KAKABIKA FALLS: The Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon has the Kakabika Waterfalls. That is just west of the cabin on Road 527. Turn right, driving west off the main highway. It is a beautiful waterfall with S curves, mosses, variety of trees, etc. More waterfalls in the vicinity of the cabin also. Waterfalls list at cabin website of: www.waterfalls-watersmeet.weebly.com. MIDDLE BRANCH OF THE ONTONAGON: Part of the National Wild and Scenic Wild River System. The Middle Branch of the Ontonagon is also east of the cabin. Fishing for trout, walleye, etc. Restoration project of Historic Lake Sturgeon. Canoeing and kayaking. CISCO CHAIN: The Cisco Chain of Lakes is 15 lakes. Boundary Waters fishing regulations (using either Wisconsin or Michigan fishing licenses) on Mamie, West Bay and Big Lake). From the driveway of the cabin go down Cisco Lake Road to the Cisco Lake Boat Landing. Or, there is the Clearwater Lake Boat Landing that is also down Cisco Lake Road. Map of Cisco Chain in cabin and mapbook to use during your stay. Here are some You Tube videos of Cisco Chain Fall Fishing: https://youtu.be/x39AJInlwi4 or And, some overall videos of channels, lakes, fish: : https://youtu.be/zN3WH5OSPtM orhttps://youtu.be/f2tF0ovW1RM or https://youtu.be/Dp71WQ0KEvA .Some say: that some of the best ice fishing of the year on the Cisco Lakes Chain is on first ice in early December and again just before the walleye season closes and that some of the good first ice action takes place on the east side of the lake near the islands.” The deepest water in the lake being approximatley 20 feet, fishing for most species on Cisco Lake is a shallow water proposition. First ice some find just about everything in 6 to 8 feet of water. Some use tipups with minnows or jig with lures like Swedish Pimples. The walleyes gradually move deeper as the winter progresses. Cisco Lake has some good perch. Yellowbellies topping 13 inches are not uncommon. And, then 8 to 10 inch perch are common. Try wigglers in the 15 to 20 feet water depths near the center of the lake for the perch action. Cisco Lake also produces a Winter fishery for other panfish species.. Hand sized bluegills and sunfish near the eastside islands and near the outer islands on the southwest side. Larva works best. Crappies are becoming common, and in the 12 to 14 inch class. Like most, Cisco’s slab crappies can’t resist a lively shiner minnow. Ice-anglers can gain access to Cisco Lake at the public boat landing (which is down Cisco Lake Road from the cabin driveway). More information on lakes on the Winter website. BEATONS LAKE: Beatons Lake is just north of the cabin (circle driveway of the cabin goes out on Beatons Lake Road). Variety of types of trout, etc. Approximately a 330 acre lake. The 330-acre lake is located about 12 miles northwest of Watersmeet. It reaches a maximum depth of 90 feet with sparse aquatic vegetation, though there is an almost continuous gravel shoal area around the lake that should provide adequate spawning habitat for smallmouth bass. The lake has no inlet and forms the headwaters of Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout, and drains into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. This lake has beautiful night skies for watching northern lights and meteor showers. People who have never experienced night-fishing with lanterns for trout will find this a great place to do so. See mapbook or maps for correct roads to boat landing. TWO MILE CREEK: Come explore and use the cabin as your base for adventures. Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout, and drains into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. And, rocks such as quartz and copper, etc. Several hundred meters to the east, on the east side of Two Mile Creek, Archean gneiss is exposed along County road 206 and for about 300 m north of the road. SYLVANIA WILDERNESS: Sylvania Wilderness Natural Area is east of the cabin. Sylvania Wilderness has much history regarding movie stars, land donation, changes in the area and more. VISITOR CENTER: The Visitor Center in Watersmeet, MI has a store that has books on the area including 'Sylvania' by Bonnie Peacock. Displays, presentations, maps, gift store, and more. On the corner of Highway 2 and Highway 45 (up on the hill). LAKE GOGEBIC: Lake Gogebic (the largest lake in Michigan) is west of the cabin. Look for Stagecoach Road (last stagecoach robbery information with Black Bart history) and there is a boat landing on the southern side of Lake Gogebic. Variety of fish including Walleye, Jumbo Perch or Yellow Bellie Perch, Trout, Whitefish, Bluegill, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Cisco, etc. Yearly Walleye Fishing Tournament. Lake Gogebic is fed by the Slate River, Gillis Creek, Bingham Creek, Hendrick Creek, Merriweather Creek, Knute Creek, Montgomery Creek, and Trout Brook Creek. Lake Gogebic is connected to Sun Dance Lake via the Slate River and Pelton Creek, to Cup Lake via Trout Brook, and to Victoria Reservoir via the West Branch of the Ontonagon River. Some say ice fishing: Michigan’s Lake Gogebic is famous for yellow bellies. Some start ice fishing around Thanksgiving on Gogebic County’s Lake Gogebic. It could be a popular first-ice perch venue. The 12,800-acre lake has (from what some say at times) safe ice over the entire lake by mid-December. (but find out for yourself, ask, research, etc.). Some look for hot first ice action on either end of the lake. Rivers that enter and exit the lake could be good areas. There may not be a lake that produces more 15-inch yellow perch than Gogebic. For early season fishing in Spring: Perch fishing will be most likely in the shallows on the north and also south end around the emerging weed beds. Or, for Walleye from the May 15th to mid June try jig fishing for Walleyes. Fall is a good time for Walleye fishing generally. POMEROY LAKE: Many types of fishing. Pomeroy Lake is located in Gogebic County, Michigan. From the cabin it is approximately Southwest. This lake is 314 acres in size. It is approximately 30 feet deep at its deepest point. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Black Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge (Muskie or Musky), Northern Pike and Walleye. YouTube video showing Clearwater Lake, Crooked Lake, Pomeroy Lake https://youtu.be/BFI-cFfTYuk. Beautiful scenic site with bench down by Pomeroy Lake Area. Signs on road marked 'scenic site'. Swans have been seen there. LANGFORD LAKE: This lake is approximately Southwest from the cabin. Langford Lake is located in Gogebic County, Michigan. This lake is 481 acres in size. It is approximately 10 feet deep at its deepest point. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Black Crappie, Bluegill, Northern Pike, Rock Bass, Bullhead, Smallmouth Bass, Sunfish, Walleye and Yellow Perch. Area to see turtles and hear the loons. Bullheads are like little catfish. They strike hard with no pretense of caution. They fight tenaciously. Some like them rolled in cornmeal and fried golden-brown. Bullheads don’t get very big, but they have many qualities that make them fun to catch and eat. A YouTube video (made by a fisherman) at: https://youtu.be/NfIgZIrLjio. Or, another YouTube video of relaxing sound of loons is: https://youtu.be/65qZgiOj3uw SLATE RIVER: By Marenisco. Slate River flows to Lake Gogebic. Judson Waterfalls is on the Slate River. Judson Waterfalls is located if you drive down Stagecoach Road from the cabin. More information on the waterfalls website for the cabin. PELTON RIVER: The Pelton River is a 5.9-mile-long (9.5 km) tributary of the Slate River in Gogebic County on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the United States. Via the Slate River, its water flows to Lake Gogebic, which feeds the West Branch Ontonagon River, flowing to the Ontonagon River OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST: Behind the cabin is part of the Ottawa National Forest (look at maps for area or ask regarding other boundaries, private properties, etc.). The cabin is also on acreage. PRESQUE ISLE RIVERS, WATERS AREA: There is a place in Wisconsin's famed Northwoods, a vast swath of forest and glacial lake country that deserves to be named "Wisconsin's Last Wilderness." 77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams. The top attraction is the natural splendor of the Northwoods, with a location that is immediately adjacent to Michigan's sprawling Ottawa National Forest. Wisconsin's 20,000 plus acres of Northern Highland State Forest is also close by. The cabin 'Stickley Lodge Getaway' is just over the Wisconsin border. And, that border follows along the Cisco Chain, etc. This includes the Presque Isle area. Over the September 9th-11th weekend (verify dates different years), nearly 1,000 hardcore musky fishermen from throughout the Midwest will converge on Vilas County’s Presque Isle for annual World Championship Musky Classic (WCMC). Presque Isle Area is on the Continental Divide, with waters flowing north to Lake Superior. The crystal clear Presque Isle River flows across the Wisconsin-Michigan border, and into the Upper Peninsula’s one million-acre Ottawa National Forest. The river is listed as a Wild and Scenic River System. From Highway 2, Marenisco it is approximately 8 miles to Presque Isle Waters. Portions of the Presque Isle River are considered by some as the most challenging whitewater in Michigan, if not in the Midwest. This river is listed as one of the ten North American rivers that "define the outer edge of contemporary whitewater paddling." Its outstandingly remarkable values include scenery, recreation, geology, fish and wildlife. This river is listed as one of the ten North American rivers that "defines the outer edge of contemporary whitewater paddling" (Canoe Magazine). There are more quiet areas of the river also (verify maps, ask outfitters, see canoeing and kayaking information online, etc.). Anytime after mid-August, lake run trout and salmon begin their river runs to spawn. Presque Isle river holds brown, rainbow and lake trout and coho, pink and king salmon. Upstream is fly fisherman's country. Inland trout season opens late spring and closes the end of September. There are some parking areas that are by the river system marked with signs. See canoeing and kayaking website for the cabin for more information. YONDOTA FALLS: Outside of Marenisco, MI, take Cty Rd 523 north of town. The trailhead is just north of the bridge over Presque Isle River, hidden away in the trees. Once at the trailhead, hike down roughly 0.25 to 0.5 miles to see the waterfalls to your left. There are multiple sets of falls to see along the way. More waterfalls in the vicinity of the cabin also. See the website for waterfalls around the area of the cabin, etc. on the main cabin website. MAPS, MAPBOOKS, PLATBOOKS: There are mapbooks in the cabin to use during your stay for lakes, rivers, trails. Otherwise, Sylvania Outfitters sell various books. And, the MI-Trale books are for sale in various locations. The MI-Trale books include information on rivers, canoeing, ORV (ATV, UTV) trails, and more. County platbooks are available through the courthouse in Bessemer, MI for Gogebic County, MI. And, then there are also platbooks for Ontonagon County for sale at the Ontonagon Courthouse. Platbooks will show National Forest, private properties, etc. HENRY LAKE: This is a very scenic lake (43 acres) that is entirely surrounded by National Forest Land. There is a National Forest campground at the north end of the lake. A barrier free fishing pier is available. Typical fish species available: Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Bullhead. There is a boardwalk at Henry Lake. Was picnic tables and water pump. LAKES, RIVERS, CREEKS: There are other lakes, rivers and creeks such as: Tenderfoot Creek, Two Mile Creek, Little Pomeroy Lake, Jane Lake, and others.
